The Fairy Tale Begins....
It's no secret, to those of you that are friends/family and/or business acquaintances, that I've always been doing like 20 different things at the same time to try to make an extra buck or do something I actually enjoy.
As my very patient wife (i luv u dear) will attest, none of these things have panned out thus far. Don't get me wrong, I've had a lot of fun. Friends will remember the height of Herr Vaughnster Snowboards and "the limo" days. Damn, those were fun! But alas, that's someone else's dream and company not mine. I'm now 40 and it's time to focus on doing something for myself and my family. Not working for the man, not making someone else more money; instead making it happen for me and my family. I've been toying with this idea for a bit....but until I listened to Guy Kawasaki's The Art of The Start and more specifically Chapter 5 : The Art of Bootstrapping, I hadn't had the confidence in my idea I needed. Here's the section that laid out my roadmap :
Starting as a Service Business :
One of the advantages of starting as a service business is that cash starts flowing immediately. This is a classic example of bootstrapping a software (or web app) company. The fairy tale goes like this:
- Some programmers get together to provide services to a niche market. They operate as consultants, getting down and dirty with the clients. Billing is on an hourly basis, payable in 30 days.
- In the course of doing business they develop a tool. As they develop the tool they learn that their clients could benefit from using this tool
- They use the profits from the consulting business to fund the development of the tool and at this point the consulting business has steady income.
- They complete development of the tool and try selling it instead of consulting services. Sales take off.
- The company goes public or Google buys them.
- The founders buy Porsches, Audi's or Mercedes and live happily ever after.
What today starts as a service will soon be a webapp.
Obviously this is extremely boiled down and if it was this easy everyone would own a software company but you get the idea. FYI... I'd probably change that last part 'cause I'm cool w/ my volvo as long as it runs, but wouldn't mind being able to buy a place closer to downtown HB. I digress...
So as of today I am VERY, VERY, VERY (and somewhat relieved) to announce my new found FOCUS:
theboost = helping small businesses establish an authentic online presence that drives revenue
With that comes the shedding of all things that are not related to making theboost successful.
- surfing (unless it's really good, besides I hardly go anymore with training for the ironman)
- long uneccessary chats, phone calls or emails
- johnnyrocketdesign.com - no longer pursuing business here
- baseball (that's actually already been shed)
- hvsnowboards - haven't really been involved but can't be going forward
- generally anything that's not helping theboost become successful
And I know I'll get shit for this but this is the focus list I'm going to attempt to adhere to:
1) The Boost
2) The Family
3) Ironman Training
Please hold all of your "I can't believe he put the business before the family" comments. It's not that they are second, but if I don't get my ass in gear.... believe me they will be the focus because we'll all be living out of the MiniVan parked in the Lucci's parking lot on Mag and Adams!
I'm sure these will change around from time to time, but I think if I can boil it down to just these three things, I might have a chance to make something happen here.
Wish me luck! It's 12pm.... and The Boost awaits.
